Hi lovely people. I can’t believe that I didn’t pop in at the beginning of the year to wish you a beautiful 2017. How have you been enjoying the year? Hope you are achieving your goals career and/or study wise?
Thanks to God: I passed my MCC QE Part 1 and IELTS. After that, I applied for the Alberta IMG program and the next step in this process is to go in for the CaRMS residency applications.
If you’re interested in knowing the step-by-step process of getting a residency program in Canada (especially for the province of Alberta), please leave a comment and I’ll make a separate post for that. If you’re already a specialist or you have some years of experience, there are other alternatives and pathways. I can also write what I know about it. Please let me know if I should do a write-up on this too.

Thanks for the congratulations! The MCCQE1 is harder than the MCCEE and a different format. I’ll see if I can do a post on what to expect.
It has a multiple choice section and then another with clinical scenarios which you have to fill in the blanks. To prepare for the multiple choice section, I think the best material would be the Toronto Notes. If you are short on time, then the Master the Boards USMLE Step 2 CK would be manageable (that’s what I mostly used). In addition, you can practice Step 2CK questions on UWorld Question Bank.
For the Clinical decision making section, I’m not quite sure the best way to go but I think the Toronto Notes and especially the First Aid Step 3 book and the Edmonton manual might help you know what differential diagnosis for different scenarios might be and investigations to order.

For the NAC, I think if you want to use only one source, then the Edmonton Manual is the way to go. But if you want additional materials, then the OSCE videos on YouTube will show you how to go about asking questions. Edmonton Manual even has a YouTube channel where they show some clinical examination and history taking skills. If you still need any extras, then the USMLE CS book can help.

I think it depends on your depth of knowledge. If you have a lot to review, then they’re a great idea but don’t forget to learn the Canadian guidelines and figures. Toronto Notes is helpful for that purpose.
If you’re still very familiar with your clinical knowledge, a review book like Master the Boards is acceptable.
It’s also a great idea to use UWorld CK questions if possible. There are also sample tests on the MCC website but I’m not sure if they include answers. I did one to practise just before my QE1 exam but don’t recall seeing any answers afterwards. Maybe they have changed now. Check the MCC website for more details about that.

Thanks for your informative blog and congrats on your progress so far. Are non-training experience ( senior house officer post or medical officer) accumulated from other countries like UK, Ireland, Africa etc recognized as practice experience for recency of practice. What would you consider a good or competitive QE1 score. Is 470 -480 considered a good score. What os a Nac score of 71-75.

Hi Dr Kelvin. Thank you for your kind words. In Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC, non-training experience might be considered as practice experience depending on the scope. You will have to contact the respective boards to determine your eligibility. There’s no public mention of competitive scores for QE1 but for NAC, you need at least 75.
